Secondary Programme

From the ages of 11 to 16, the compulsory subjects are English and Maths (and Science for those thinking about a career in Medicine). Children don’t want to make a mistake at this stage their future careers are at stake. Therefore, the key focus is the attaining of good results at GCSE level. This involves regular practice using latest exam questions. We have access to all examining bodies and their criteria. These resources are used to help students prepare and excel themselves for the A level challenge ahead.

We tailor make the tuition to required Exam Board by identifying the target areas for improvement. We then create the Programme and evaluate for further action, if required.

English

All children study texts that will be come up in their exams that change from one year to the next. Without thorough knowledge, it is impossible to get good grades. In addition, knowing what the examiner is looking for also helps immensely.

Students are also tested on their ability to write and find contexts within written material to question argue and persuade. The idea is that the job market is becoming more and more competitive so these key skills are critical to success.

Maths

There are four key target areas:

Numbers, Handling Data, Shape and Space and Algebra. Within each, a student must have the individual competence to independently solve problems. The questions set in exams test from all angles so learning by rote is out of the question!

Science

We have a unique Science Scheme with practical Micro-scale Experiments in Chemistry, Biology and Physics. These are crucial to a deeper understanding of scientific enquiry required at this level.

ICT

GCSE support as well as the DIADA are covered. The emphasis is on practical application of ICT. This makes ICT enjoyable and we find better response from students and therefore more success.

A child who is not ICT literate will find it difficult to cope at school. What is more, every career requires the use of the computer. This is why innovation through ICT is at the heart of learning at A Star.

Your child will have access to laptops and desktops in the learning centre at all times. From Primary ages 6 to all the way to age 18, everyone is encouraged to use computers.

Students can print off work and access the internet. Some even do their homework when they’re free!

GCSE ICT

The emphasis is on understanding Information Technology. Many children find the programming and mathematical  aspects quite boring. Therefore, to engage their interest, we use practical applications as much as possible.

FREE ASSESSMENT

Our unique tutoring programmes are one to one. We invite parents for a FREE and friendly consultation.

Mathematics Year 7 – 11

  • Year 7, 8 and 9 we cover number, algebra, data, shape and space from levels 3 to level 8.
  • Individual tuition plans are created for each student to ensure that every student accelerates in their learning and at their own pace.
  • We co-ordinate our learning with school learning, to ensure school exam and assessment consistency.
  • We tutor students for GCSE Mathematics foundation course which allows students to achieve up to a grade C.
  • We tutor students for GCSE Mathematics higher course which allows students to achieve from a grade C to a grade A*.
  • We tutor iGCSE

Our Aim

We aim to encourage, motivate and inspire confidence in our students, for them to learn and improve their mathematical skills. We do this by providing them with specialist mathematics tutors who will work with them at their pace and create for them an individual plan of tuition to help develop their confidence and accelerate in their learning. We will also coach students to be able to apply what they learn competently in exams so they can achieve the high levels at GCSE.
